In all my ranting about distribution and who’s gotten it wrong, I’ve failed to mention one effort that is making in-roads in the right direction. Morgan Freeman and his ClickStar venture are offering his new movie, 10 Items or Less, available for download just two weeks after its theatrical debut. One of the ways they’re able to do that is through an agreement with Landmark Theaters. Because of the drastically reduced window, Landmark will receive a share of the revenue from digital downloads of the movie, giving them a stake in not only its theatrical but also its digital success. Scott has a round-up of the issues in play here as well as a nice checklist of things to watch for to see how serious everyone is about this.
One model that’s got distribution right
