Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) contends that the FCC has the power to limit commercials for sugary foods on TV shows that have a large children’s audience.
Of course the FCC has that power. It’s exactly what they keep threatening to do to the movie industry regarding R-rated movie ads. But for some reason they claim impotence when it comes to snack food. More to the point, the movie industry has made moves at self-regulation that, while not perfect, have at least deflected a fair amount of criticism. The food industry just seems content, though, to sit back and wait for these things to happen to them.
