Experiment Tracking #2

Posted in Media by CThilk on August 10, 2009

Second Monday of my great Media Experiment, where I try to get a sense of how much ad revenue I’m sending – according to Bit.ly trackable link stats – to media properties that keep talking about erecting pay walls because of all of us nasty bloggers.

These numbers are for 7/28 – 8/7.

  • Links Shared: 48
  • Click: 430
  • Ad revenue at $50 CPM ($.05/click): $21.50
  • Ad revenue at $30 CPM ($.03/click): $12.90

So if Steven Brill wants to charge $10 a month for me to access a coalition of newspapers and magazines, I’ve at least paid for one month if not two.

    Chris, your point is well taken but let’s be serious, no one is getting a $50 cpm for anything in 2009. Not at any sort of scale that is.

      @Ryan:

      That’s a fair point and I realize I’m over-estimating here – and I’ll address that the next time I do one of these updates. But the points remain that 1) If they’re not getting a high enough CPM, that’s a problem that’s directly tied to their early attitudes toward the web and 2) I’m earning them money by sending them their way. The transaction is, I’ll admit, two way since my reputation is enhanced by pointing people to good content. But I’m not getting monetary benefit from linking to them while they are from my doing so.
